The 9th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting took place in the Shoppers Drug Mart parking lot and DQ lawn in Fall River on November 26 with hot chocolate, music, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and of course, the lighting of our favourite Christmas tree.
The Tree Lighting Committee consisted of Louise MacDonald, Jason Crowell, Pat Healey, Jessesar Mitchell and Matt Dagley.
Planning starts early and involves making sure the site, tree, entertainment, grand prize and guests are contacted and in place. Snacks, social media, ballot entries, the arrival of Santa, Livestream prep and Glow Rentals is a huge part of creating the magic for the evening.
It was a cold and VERY windy night but once everything was tied tightly down, we had approximately 1,000 people dress up warm and enjoy the evening with us.
The community was treated to amazing music by our main musical act, Tevon Tynes & the Superstatics. Tevon (lead singer and guitarist), as well as Michael (drummer) are both teachers at Joyful Sounds Music Studio so the connection to the community was wonderful.
Special Guest, Sean Hanlon, a GP Vanier Phys. Ed teach and Canada Games ambassador and mentor to numerous athletes, was invited to share in the moment.
Some students from Joyful Sounds Music Studio also treated us with their beautiful singing.
We had a mailbox on site for children to drop off their letters to Santa. These are delivered to the North Pole, and every letter at the tree lighting that has a return address of the child receives a special response.
